Riddell added legendary football player Peyton Manning as a strategic advisor to the business. In addition, Manning will be Riddell’s first-ever brand ambassador supporting the football community.
Riddell, the company behind the helmets worn by around 60 percent of NFL players, will use a new 3D head-scanning process on each player who wears its new Precision Fit headgear. To be sure there are other innovations in helmet tech, but unlike just about every other helmet design on the market, which use inflatable pads that are adjusted manually by handheld air pumps, the inside of the Precision Fit models have a custom-fit liner system made of "energy managing materials" built according to the personalized scan data of each player's head.
It's a name that is synonymous with football. About sixty percent of the NFL and more than half of all college and high school teams use Riddell helmets made in Lorain County. At peak season, about 500 people can put together about 2,000 helmets a day at its new North Ridgeville plant. “We were able to start with a blank slate and redefine how we wanted this plant organized and how we wanted it to be laid out and that's helped tremendously," said plant general manager, Ben Marker.
Approximately 4,000 people – some waiting as long as 30 minutes to get inside – toured the new Riddell facility during a public open house of the football helmet maker’s new North Ridgeville home May 21. Riddell moved from Elyria into the 347,205-square-foot facility on Center Ridge Road a couple of months ago. North Ridgeville was able to woo the company in part because of a tax incentive package. The new plant, which took less than a year to complete, takes care of painting and polishing the helmets, many of which end up protecting NFL and college football players. The shell of the helmets are made in Twinsburg.

In a video featuring UT head athletic trainer, Anthony Pass, he shows off the Riddell helmets that the Longhorns use. The helmets are equipped with a set of sensors that record the hits taken by players during practice in terms of G-Forces, location, direction, and severity. One of the even cooler parts about the technology is that the data from the hit is then sent to a handheld sensor, which is used by the training staff.

Colgate phased into the advanced world of football helmet technology with a recent visit from Riddell representatives sporting their new Precision-Fit engineering. First-year Raiders Abu Daramy, Nick Diaco, Alex Mathews and Nick Wheeler were scanned and fitted for the latest in helmet technology. The goal of the new headgear is to improve fit, stability and vision inside the helmet as well as overall player protection. The process uses 3D scanning techniques to build a completely custom-fitting helmet tailored to an individual player's head shape and size.

With the start of the new school year comes the start of high school sports. This year in South Carolina, one school is adding Riddell InSite sensors inside football helmets registers ‘hard hits’ to the helmet, which could help detect concussions.
