In June, Oyster Bay purchased 85 five-star helmets from Riddell that feature a bendable forehead that is intended to absorb more impact. “To me this gives us and our trainer a chance to look at all 11 players [on the field] at a given time — or all 80 or so athletes that are in our program at a given time — because they’re all going to be hooked into the system and hooked right up to the trainer,” athletic director Kevin Trentowski said. “It’s a set of eyes that goes on every athlete.”
This year, the school district purchased helmet sensors for the varsity team. The sensors measure helmet impacts. School trainers are equipped with monitors and are alerted of any possible high-impact hits.
This season the Mules varsity players are equipped with wireless impact sensors. “Basically it’s a liner that goes inside the helmet,” explains Gene Philips, the Alamo Heights School District athletic director. He says the Mules’ booster club paid $8,000 dollars for the impact sensor system.
As concussions garner debate in the football world, Hortonville High School is doing its part to protect young players and keep concerned families from pulling out of the sport. This fall the Polar Bears step onto the gridiron every Friday night with a high-tech lifeline inside their helmets. In the words of Jen Kalwitz, mother of senior linebacker Blake Kalwitz, the cutting-edge Riddell InSite Response System is “one more set of eyes of the field” to aid the athletic trainer and coaches.

Coby Fleener is with us and he is here to talk about the USA Football 2015 Protection Tour... Coby how did you get involved with this? "I think it was a good fit because USA Football is based in Indianapolis. I have talked with Riddell before because I wear their highest rate helmet, actually the highest rated helmet available, because I want to protect myself as best as possible... and so it was only a natural fit when they came and said hey we are trying to make the game safer, would you try to get the word out there for us, and I said yeah."
We are entering the third year of a ground-breaking study between TGen, ASU, Barrow, AT Still University, and Riddell that correlates accelerometer data in football helmets with biomarkers in the blood, urine and saliva to objectively diagnose concussions.
Riddell invested in a technology called HITS or our sideline response system, which is an instrumented on-field helmet technology that can monitor the head impacts that players are seeing on the field and wirelessly report that information back to the sideline.
Varsity football players are wearing new top of the line helmets this year. They have sensors which send an alert to a coach if a player is hit especially hard.
Now one district is implementing new technology to better protect players. The team outfitted about 50 helmets with a battery operated sensor system designed to measure the severity of impact. The sensors are then installed inside the helmet underneath protective padding.
