When it comes to safety in football, Stroudsburg took a huge leap this summer. The school purchased 20 new Riddell helmets that have been equipped with the InSite Impact Response System. “Safety is paramount,” Honeywell said. “If there is something out there that can prevent our kids from sustaining a major concussion or major injury, and we can prevent it for this, it’s money well spent.”
As part of the purchase, 30 of the helmets will be equipped with the state-of-the-art Riddell InSite Impact Response System that measures impacts to the head and alerts trainers and doctors immediately when a significant single or multiple hits occur. “We want to make sure we invest and do everything we can to keep all our student-athletes safe,” Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Zwiebel said.
Taking the pressure off players to make the call, TPCA players are wearing new state-of-the-art Riddell helmets with sensor pads. “When they test marketed them, they collected data on 1.8 million hits,” Johnson said.
More high profile is the second project by Maple Valley, the use of the new Riddell SpeedFlex helmets, using InSite technology — a monitoring system that measures the impact of the skull against the inside of the helmet.
When members of the varsity and junior varsity football programs at Suttons Bay High School opened camp two weeks ago, they became the first school in Northern Michigan to utilize Riddell’s InSite Impact Response System.“There’s no doubt that this is an extra set of eyes,” Webb said “It’s basically a system that adds an extra set of eyes to help the sideline personnel with evaluating players and the safety of players, which is what it’s all about. It’s just smarter, safer football.”
“What we’re hoping is to be the leaders in the state, and the country, when it comes to concussion awareness,” said Martin, whose team is one of the first high schools in the state with the SpeedFlex headgear, which has an InSite Impact Response System built in. “We want to be that spearhead that makes districts understand that there is an obligation to keeping our kids safe.”
Bright landed on his head, activating the Riddell InSite sensor pad tucked inside his helmet that is designed to measure impact. "If it goes off, I can go right to the kid and say hey, let me take a look at you," Gotthardt said. "Before, I wouldn't have known unless it was a real bad hit."
The system is designed to be a less costly method designed from data obtained through the Sideline Response System. University of Florida Health researchers are using the helmets of Gator football players to help measure the force of on-field hits as part of ongoing efforts to better understand and prevent concussions and treat them before they cause lasting damage.
He was concussed twice in a short amount of time, and if he received a third concussion he wouldn't be allowed to play any high school sport for the rest of this time as a student.
